While we are disturbed by the number of Americans who decided to cast their votes for President-elect Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris this year, we remain encouraged by the enthusiasm and hard work performed by dedicated volunteers within our Malibu community and across the nation to help elect Democrats. The fight continues onward, and we are prepared to do our part to defend the inhabitants, institutions, and interests of the United States and our allies abroad.
This election cycle, over one hundred volunteers from Malibu hand-wrote over ten thousand postcards, called hundreds of thousands of voters, canvassed across neighboring battleground congressional districts and swing states to knock on many additional thousands of doors, and helped raise over one million dollars for Democratic candidates. Additionally, Malibu Democrats spent hundreds of hours speaking directly with voters and distributing voter registration forms and election information on Sundays at the Malibu Farmers Market.
Congratulations to Malibu’s U.S. Representative Brad Sherman (CA-32), California State Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (AD-42), our newly-elected U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, Congressmember-elect George Whitesides (CA-27), and all other victorious candidates who voters entrusted with the great responsibility of representing our shared values and accomplishing our common goals. We look forward to continuing to work with Sen. Schiff, Rep. Sherman, Asm. Irwin, and our other elected officials to address ongoing local issues such as improving PCH and public safety, strengthening fire prevention and response, and protecting our environment and open spaces.
Locally, while county election officials will continue to count votes until the end of the month, Bruce Silverstein, Steve Uhring, and Haylynn Conrad currently lead the field of Malibu City Council candidates. We thank each of the candidates who participated in our Malibu Democratic Club forum in October, congratulate the to-be-certified winners, and trust that they will each do their best to serve Malibu. We also congratulate the committee supporting our local school facilities bond, Measure MM, which appears to have passed.
We extend our gratitude to President Joe Biden, California’s own Vice President Kamala Harris, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and all of the Democratic candidates and grassroots volunteers across the country for their service and commitment to defending democracy. Faced against candidates promoting hate, division, and falsehoods, history will remember that Democrats stood on the side of justice, unity, and truth.
We especially thank our partners at Grassroots Democrats HQ and Westside Democratic HQ for all of the incredible work that they do, and for consistently supporting our volunteer efforts in Malibu.
If you are feeling afraid or vulnerable in the aftermath of this election for any reason, please know that we at the Malibu Democratic Club are here to foster community, support those at risk and in need, and provide information on other helpful resources and organizations.
We will continue to host monthly Board meetings and organize regular events throughout non-election years, and invite you to join the club or renew your annual membership to support our ongoing efforts to be of service while fighting to protect our democracy, our rights, and our freedoms. We will soon resume our monthly hikes and gatherings to more closely unite our Malibu Democratic community, and continue to send out periodic email updates highlighting upcoming events and other useful information.
We wish you joy over the final months of 2024 and during whichever holidays you choose to observe and celebrate.
In solidarity & with gratitude,
Gina Muscatel, Co-President, Malibu Democratic Club
Hap Henry, Co-President, Malibu Democratic Club
Marilyn Green, Volunteer Chair, Malibu Democratic Club

In the aftermath of each fire, as people rebuild their lives and their homes, they also seek answers and information about resiliency. To empower our friends and neighbors, TreePeople is holding two “Building Fire Resilient Homes and Communities: Innovations and Lessons from Australia”symposiums. Open to the public, each event will inform and educate those living in or near high-fire risk areas on how to modify or rebuild their homes with the most innovative Best Management Practices aimed at increasing fire resilience.
Fire resilient lawn before and after.
The symposiums will feature key lessons and successes achieved in Australia in response to fires. Given that Australia has suffered many of the same climate change-induced impacts as California, TreePeople has invited a leader in Australian Emergency Management to share constructive lessons learned from their devastating “Black Saturday Bushfires” of 2009. The expert will present practical and applicable modifications in building design, on-site water capture, vegetation and fuel management, and building resilient communities to increase fire safety and resiliency. Additionally, guests will be able to hear from a panel of experts discussing the aforementioned topics as well as participate in an interactive Q&A session.
Home cisterns store water which can be used against fires.
Space is limited at each event, so please RSVP for one of the following symposiums.

We welcome Dave Barry back to our stage, Dave Barry in conversation with Jane Smiley was the very first event at Live Talks Los Angeles. Watch the video. He has appeared several times on our stage. He was interviewed by by Matt Groening in 2013 for his novel, Insane City. (Video)
Dave Barry is the author of more than thirty books, including such national bestsellers as the nonfiction I’ll Mature When I’m Dead, Dave Barry’s Money Secrets, Dave Barry Turns 50, and Dave Barry’s Guide to Guys, as well as the novels Insane City, Tricky Business, Big Trouble, Lunatics (with Alan Zweibel), and his Peter Pan prequels (with Ridley Pearson). Two of his books have been made into movies (Big Trouble and Dave Barry’s Guide to Guys), and a play based on his first Peter Pan book, Peter and the Starcatcher, is currently on a national tour and won five Tony Awards on Broadway. For a while, his life was even a television series, Dave’s World. He plays guitar in the all-author rock band, The Rock Bottom Remainders. For many years he wrote a nationally syndicated humor column, which won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary.
“Lessons from Lucy is extremely funny (in a couple of places I laughed until water ran from my eyes and a slightly thicker fluid came from my nose). You’d expect that from Dave Barry. What you might not expect is how insightful it is, and downright touching. If you’ve grown old along with Dave, you will want to read this book. You’ll also want to read it if you’re a dog lover, but that’s optional. These are very lively life lessons even for the canine-impaired.”— Stephen King
“[Barry] is truly the funniest man living in the three mile ‘safe’ zone off the shores of America.”
—Steve Martin
“Despite years of medication, Dave Barry is still the funniest damn writer in the whole country. Let’s hope he never grows up.”—Carl Hiaasen
Faced with the obstacles and challenges of life after middle age, Dave Barry turns to his best dog, Lucy, to learn how to live his best life. From “Make New Friends” (an unfortunate fail when he can’t overcome his dislike for mankind) to “Don’t Stop Having Fun” (validating his longtime membership in a marching unit that performs in parades—and even Obama’s inauguration), Dave navigates his later years with good humor and grace. Lucy teaches Dave how to live in the present, how to let go of daily grievances, and how to feel good in your own skin. The lessons are drawn from Dave’s routine humiliations and stream-of-consciousness accounts of the absurdities of daily life, which will leave you heaving with laughter and recognition.
Laugh-out-loud hilarious, whether he’s trying to “Pay Attention to the People You Love” (even when your brain is not listening) or deciding to “Let Go of Your Anger,” Dave Barry’s Lessons From Lucy is a witty and wise guide to joyous living.
Webinar for High School Students on How to Do A Voter Registration Drive
@ Online
Please join The Civics Center for a webinar on how to plan a voter registration drive in your high school.
The Civics Center presents HIGH SCHOOL VOTER REG TRAINING: A WEBINAR Get trained in 1 hour online Tuesday, April 9 8-9pm (PT) FREE Sign up in advance HERE:
The webinar will cover 10 steps for planning a drive, with time for question and answers. This hour-long session will be followed by a 20-minute tutorial for interested students on how to fill out the California voter registration form.
You will receive further information about joining the webinar after signing up.
Before the webinar, please take a look at our resources and blog at thecivicscenter.org for some initial ideas! All attendees are encouraged to register their clubs and drives with The Civics Center at tinyurl.com/ClubsDrives. We look forward to staying in touch to help plan and promote voter registration at your high school.
16 and 17 year olds can pre-register to vote in CA. It’s online and super easy. Yet, only 14% of them are preregistered. High Schools should play a role in this, but most of them don’t have the staff or the budget to deal. That’s where The Civics Center comes in, which is an organization started by the amazing Laura B. It’s focused on getting high school students registered. To that end, The Civics Center is hosting a 1 hour webinar to train high school students — like your kids!! — on how to host voter registration drivers in their schools.
The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents Dr. Stephen Davis in cooperation with the City of Malibu and Pepperdine University. Dr. Davis is a plant ecologist at Pepperdine University who has studied the impact of wildfires in and around Malibu. This event is part of Pepperdine’s annual Climate Calling Conference and will take place in Elkins Auditorium at Pepperdine University. RSVPs are required.
Dr. Davis has been the principle investigator on more than 15 government grants, primarily from the National Science Foundation. Much of his personal research centers on plant physiological ecology, including adaptations of chaparral vegetation to wildfire, drought, and freezing. He has published in such journals as Nature, Ecology, and The American Journal of Botany.
The recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Davis’s distinctive approach has been to facilitate student scholarship through the completion of research projects, the writing of honors theses, presentation by students of their research findings at regional and national scientific conferences, and finally through student publication of their work in refereed, scientific journals
Dr. Davis earned his Ph.D. in 1974 from Texas A&M University, after which he joined the faculty at Pepperdine University in Malibu. He has been a visiting scholar at Stanford University, UCLA, University of Utah, and Baylor University.
The ramifications of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s just-submitted report are still unknown. Assessing the likely impact of the report are Malcolm Nance, author and 33-year U.S. intelligence veteran; CNN analyst Asha Rangappa, a former F.B.I. special agent specializing in counterintelligence investigations; and Scott Horton, a Columbia law professor and contributing editor for Harper’s Magazine in legal affairs and national security. Moderated by journalist, documentary filmmaker, and KPFK 90.7 FM radio host Ian Masters.

Really Special Deal!$38: 1 General Admission ticket with one copy of Cathy Guisewite’s Fifty Things That Aren’t My Fault
The wonderful cartoon, “Cathy”, ran for 34 years in over 1400 newspapers across the country. Millions of women turned to “Cathy” first thing in the morning for her potent dose of satire, advice, commentary and wisdom on what it means to be a woman. She crossed generational lines and her cartoons were relevant to just about any woman, any age. “Cathy” made us laugh about diets, dating, family, struggles at the office, and just about every conceivable challenge a woman could and would face on a daily basis.
We can relax now because Cathy has come back, and we the reader enjoy a fuller take on her wit, wisdom and observation. Her new book, Fifty Things That Aren’t My Fault, is one of the most anticipated books of 2019, and touches on much of what Cathy our cartoon heroine dealt with, but with the benefit of great depth. In her new collection of essays, Cathy Guisewite moves the conversation towards what it means to be an aging woman, with aging parents, downsizing (in all sorts of ways), and a great deal more. Cathy Guisewite distilled so much about life into a cartoon panel or two with a few strokes of pencil and a great caption. In her new wonderful collection, imagine how much more she gives us to thing about, and to laugh at.
In conversation with actress Beth Grant. Beth is a character actor known for her portrayal of eccentric characters, whether on the Mindy Project as Beverly, or in scores of other television shows and films. She has appeared in three Oscar- winning Best Pictures: The Artist, No Country for Old Men, and Rain Man.
