“Taming of the Shrew” – A Modern Take @ Pepperdine University, Smothers Theater
Apr 4 @ 7:30 pm

The Taming of the Shrew

presented by Pepperdine Theatre Department

written by William Shakespeare, directed by Scott Alan Smith

Wednesday – Friday evening,  April 3-5,  at 7:30 pm. Saturday, April 6, matinee at 2:00 pm.

Smothers Theatre

The Pepperdine Theatre Department’s production of The Taming of the Shrew promises to be anything but tame. In this unbridled new spin on Shakespeare’s comedic battle of the sexes, themes of cross-dressing, gender roles, love, power, relationships, and companionship are explored and raucous heights are reached when the shrew is truly put on the other foot . . . Scott Alan Smith directs Andrew Borba’s celebrated version that thrilled audiences at the famed Chautauqua Theatre Company.

Join a talk back with the actors and director after the Wednesday performance.

California’s 37th District covers from West LA and Culver City to Downtown LA, north up to Beverly Hills and south to Inglewood.

Here in Malibu we are represented by our great Congressman Ted Lieu.  But LA also has some other great Members of Congress covering neighboring or nearby districts, including Adam Schiff and Karen Bass.  Here’s your opportunity to get to know Karen Bass and hear her views of what it’s like in DC these days!

“No one gives better Town Hall than Congresswoman Bass.  I don’t know what it is. Maybe how she organizes the questions.  Or speaks the truth.  I remember back in 2017, when I was at my lowest, I went to hear her speak. It was at the Holman United Methodist Church.  She lifted me up that day.  I walked out of that sanctuary rejuvenated, motivated, galvanized to do more, organize more, show up more.  She’s doing it again this weekend.  She holding a town hall to discuss what’s happening in DC and what her plans are for this year.  Don’t miss it.  She’ll make you feel good.”  Jennifer Levin

BIO

Congressmember Karen Bass was re-elected to her fifth term representing California’s 37th Congressional District in November of 2018. Later that month, she was elected by her peers to serve as the Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), which boasts a historic 55 members in the 116th Congress. Congressmember Bass also serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations and as a member on the House Judiciary Committee.

Prior to serving in Congress, Congressmember Bass made history as the first-ever African American woman to serve as Speaker of any state assembly. In this powerful state legislative role, she helped California to recover from the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, for which she won the 2010 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

Congressmember Bass grew up in the Venice/Fairfax area of Los Angeles, which is the same area she represents today in Congress. She is a graduate of California State Dominguez Hills, theUniversity of Southern California’s School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program, and theUSC Masters Program in Social Work.

Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach features a wickedly tuneful score by the Tony & Academy Award-winning team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land, The Greatest Showman)and a curiously quirky book by Timothy Allen McDonald. Critics rave: James and the Giant Peach is a “masterpeach!” When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach… and launches a journey of enormous proportions. Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach, among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. A magical, musical production for the whole family to enjoy!
