Building Fire Resilient Homes & Communities – Lessons from Australia @ Malibu City Hall, Auditorium
Apr 9 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Free, but you must RSVP.
RSVP (below) asap.
Space is limited.
In the aftermath of each fire, as people rebuild their lives and their homes, they also seek answers and information about resiliency. To empower our friends and neighbors, TreePeople is holding two “Building Fire Resilient Homes and Communities: Innovations and Lessons from Australia” symposiums. Open to the public, each event will inform and educate those living in or near high-fire risk areas on how to modify or rebuild their homes with the most innovative Best Management Practices aimed at increasing fire resilience. Photo Caption: Fire resilient lawn before and after.Fire resilient lawn before and after.
The symposiums will feature key lessons and successes achieved in Australia in response to fires. Given that Australia has suffered many of the same climate change-induced impacts as California, TreePeople has invited a leader in Australian Emergency Management to share constructive lessons learned from their devastating “Black Saturday Bushfires” of 2009. The expert will present practical and applicable modifications in building design, on-site water capture, vegetation and fuel management, and building resilient communities to increase fire safety and resiliency. Additionally, guests will be able to hear from a panel of experts discussing the aforementioned topics as well as participate in an interactive Q&A session. We welcome Dave Barry back to our stage, Dave Barry in conversation with Jane Smiley was the very first event at Live Talks Los Angeles. Watch the video.  He has appeared several times on our stage. He was interviewed by by Matt Groening in 2013 for his novel, Insane City. (Video)

Dave Barry is the author of more than thirty books, including such national bestsellers as the nonfiction I’ll Mature When I’m DeadDave Barry’s Money SecretsDave Barry Turns 50, and Dave Barry’s Guide to Guys, as well as the novels Insane City, Tricky Business, Big TroubleLunatics (with Alan Zweibel), and his Peter Pan prequels (with Ridley Pearson).  Two of his books have been made into movies (Big Trouble and Dave Barry’s Guide to Guys), and a play based on his first Peter Pan book, Peter and the Starcatcher, is currently on a national tour and won five Tony Awards on Broadway. For a while, his life was even a television series, Dave’s World.  He plays guitar in the all-author rock band, The Rock Bottom Remainders. For many years he wrote a nationally syndicated humor column, which won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary.

Lessons from Lucy is extremely funny (in a couple of places I laughed until water ran from my eyes and a slightly thicker fluid came from my nose). You’d expect that from Dave Barry. What you might not expect is how insightful it is, and downright touching. If you’ve grown old along with Dave, you will want to read this book. You’ll also want to read it if you’re a dog lover, but that’s optional. These are very lively life lessons even for the canine-impaired.”— Stephen King

“[Barry] is truly the funniest man living in the three mile ‘safe’ zone off the shores of America.”
—Steve Martin

“Despite years of medication, Dave Barry is still the funniest damn writer in the whole country. Let’s hope he never grows up.”—Carl Hiaasen

Faced with the obstacles and challenges of life after middle age, Dave Barry turns to his best dog, Lucy, to learn how to live his best life. From “Make New Friends” (an unfortunate fail when he can’t overcome his dislike for mankind) to “Don’t Stop Having Fun” (validating his longtime membership in a marching unit that performs in parades—and even Obama’s inauguration), Dave navigates his later years with good humor and grace. Lucy teaches Dave how to live in the present, how to let go of daily grievances, and how to feel good in your own skin. The lessons are drawn from Dave’s routine humiliations and stream-of-consciousness accounts of the absurdities of daily life, which will leave you heaving with laughter and recognition.

Laugh-out-loud hilarious, whether he’s trying to “Pay Attention to the People You Love” (even when your brain is not listening) or deciding to “Let Go of Your Anger,” Dave Barry’s Lessons From Lucy is a witty and wise guide to joyous living.

Webinar for High School Students on How to Do A Voter Registration Drive @ Online

Please join The Civics Center for a webinar on how to plan a voter registration drive in your high school.

The Civics Center presents
HIGH SCHOOL VOTER REG TRAINING: A WEBINAR
Get trained in 1 hour online
Tuesday, April 9
8-9pm (PT)
FREE
Sign up in advance HERE:

Any questions email Laura at: Lwb@thecivicscenter.org

The webinar will cover 10 steps for planning a drive, with time for question and answers. This hour-long session will be followed by a 20-minute tutorial for interested students on how to fill out the California voter registration form.

You will receive further information about joining the webinar after signing up.

Before the webinar, please take a look at our resources and blog at thecivicscenter.org for some initial ideas! All attendees are encouraged to register their clubs and drives with The Civics Center at tinyurl.com/ClubsDrives. We look forward to staying in touch to help plan and promote voter registration at your high school.

16 and 17 year olds can pre-register to vote in CA. It’s online and super easy.  Yet, only 14% of them are preregistered.  High Schools should play a role in this, but most of them don’t have the staff or the budget to deal. That’s where The Civics Center comes in, which is an organization started by the amazing Laura B.  It’s focused on getting high school students registered. To that end, The Civics Center is  hosting a 1 hour webinar to train high school students  — like your kids!! — on how to host voter registration drivers in their schools.

Really Special Deal! $38: 1 General Admission ticket with one copy of Cathy Guisewite’s Fifty Things That Aren’t My Fault

The wonderful cartoon, “Cathy”, ran for 34 years in over 1400 newspapers across the country. Millions of women turned to “Cathy” first thing in the morning for her potent dose of satire, advice, commentary and wisdom on what it means to be a woman.  She crossed generational lines and her cartoons were relevant to just about any woman, any age. “Cathy” made us laugh about diets, dating, family, struggles at the office, and just about every conceivable challenge a woman could and would face on a daily basis.

We can relax now because Cathy has come back, and we the reader enjoy a fuller take on her wit, wisdom and observation.  Her new book, Fifty Things That Aren’t My Fault, is one of the most anticipated books of 2019,  and touches on much of what Cathy our cartoon heroine dealt with, but with the benefit of great depth.  In her new collection of essays, Cathy Guisewite moves the conversation towards what it means to be an aging woman, with aging parents, downsizing (in all sorts of ways), and a great deal more.  Cathy Guisewite distilled so much about life  into a cartoon panel or two with a few strokes of pencil and a great caption.  In her new wonderful collection, imagine how much more she gives us to thing about, and to laugh at.

In conversation with actress Beth Grant. Beth is a character actor known for her portrayal of eccentric characters, whether on the Mindy Project as Beverly, or in scores of other television shows and films.  She has appeared in three Oscar- winning Best Pictures: The Artist, No Country for Old Men, and Rain Man.

ALL BOOKS MUST BE PICKED UP AT THE EVENT. WE DO NOT MAIL OR HOLD BOOKS.

Your ticket(s) will be mailed to the shipping address you listed. If you do not receive your ticket(s) in the mail, please contact Brown Paper Tickets at support@brownpapertickets.com.
