Dear Neighbors, Friends & Fellow Democrats,
While we are disturbed by the number of Americans who decided to cast their votes for President-elect Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris this year, we remain encouraged by the enthusiasm and hard work performed by dedicated volunteers within our Malibu community and across the nation to help elect Democrats. The fight continues onward, and we are prepared to do our part to defend the inhabitants, institutions, and interests of the United States and our allies abroad.
This election cycle, over one hundred volunteers from Malibu hand-wrote over ten thousand postcards, called hundreds of thousands of voters, canvassed across neighboring battleground congressional districts and swing states to knock on many additional thousands of doors, and helped raise over one million dollars for Democratic candidates. Additionally, Malibu Democrats spent hundreds of hours speaking directly with voters and distributing voter registration forms and election information on Sundays at the Malibu Farmers Market.
Congratulations to Malibu’s U.S. Representative Brad Sherman (CA-32), California State Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (AD-42), our newly-elected U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, Congressmember-elect George Whitesides (CA-27), and all other victorious candidates who voters entrusted with the great responsibility of representing our shared values and accomplishing our common goals. We look forward to continuing to work with Sen. Schiff, Rep. Sherman, Asm. Irwin, and our other elected officials to address ongoing local issues such as improving PCH and public safety, strengthening fire prevention and response, and protecting our environment and open spaces.
Locally, while county election officials will continue to count votes until the end of the month, Bruce Silverstein, Steve Uhring, and Haylynn Conrad currently lead the field of Malibu City Council candidates. We thank each of the candidates who participated in our Malibu Democratic Club forum in October, congratulate the to-be-certified winners, and trust that they will each do their best to serve Malibu. We also congratulate the committee supporting our local school facilities bond, Measure MM, which appears to have passed.
We extend our gratitude to President Joe Biden, California’s own Vice President Kamala Harris, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and all of the Democratic candidates and grassroots volunteers across the country for their service and commitment to defending democracy. Faced against candidates promoting hate, division, and falsehoods, history will remember that Democrats stood on the side of justice, unity, and truth.
We especially thank our partners at Grassroots Democrats HQ and Westside Democratic HQ for all of the incredible work that they do, and for consistently supporting our volunteer efforts in Malibu.
If you are feeling afraid or vulnerable in the aftermath of this election for any reason, please know that we at the Malibu Democratic Club are here to foster community, support those at risk and in need, and provide information on other helpful resources and organizations.
We will continue to host monthly Board meetings and organize regular events throughout non-election years, and invite you to join the club or renew your annual membership to support our ongoing efforts to be of service while fighting to protect our democracy, our rights, and our freedoms. We will soon resume our monthly hikes and gatherings to more closely unite our Malibu Democratic community, and continue to send out periodic email updates highlighting upcoming events and other useful information.
We wish you joy over the final months of 2024 and during whichever holidays you choose to observe and celebrate.
In solidarity & with gratitude,
Gina Muscatel, Co-President, Malibu Democratic Club
Hap Henry, Co-President, Malibu Democratic Club
Marilyn Green, Volunteer Chair, Malibu Democratic Club

Three Super-Star “Phenomenal Freshman” Members of Congress,
Q&A with Screenwriter, Director & Democratic Activist Billy Ray.*
These 3 Member of Congress have extraordinary credentials (see below), and in 2018, toppled long-standing Republican incumbents in Republican districts.
Elissa Slotkin, D-Michigan – former CIA*
Colin Allred, D-Texas, former NFL Player*
Kim Schrier – D-Washington, former Pediatrician*
Thursday, April 18, 2018, 3:00 PM
Paramount Studios,
Hollywood, CA
Free.
RSVP/REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
See you on the Paramount lot.
In 2018, we not only took back the House. We sent a phenomenally talented freshman class to Congress – people from all parts of the country with extraordinary talent, credentials, experience, clear vision, integrity, brains, and the ability to communicate and connect with their constituents.
In March, Billy Ray arranged for those of us in Los Angeles to meet some of these extraordinary new Representatives that sent Republicans packing in formerly solid Republican territory:
Haley Steven, D-Michigan
Kendra Horn, D-Oklahoma
Antonio Delgado, D-New York
Xochitl Torres-Small, D-New Mexico
Katie Porter, D-California (Irvine, Orange County)
For those of us who were lucky enough to attend the panel in March, it was exceptional to hear their views as Democrats in states where people view the country’s challenges differently than we do in LA, how they were able to connect with their constituents, and why their constituents chose the vision and values shared by Democrats over the ones that the Republicans in power have been offering. What we learned is that a lot people share our core Democratic values and vision of a better America, and that what people tend to agree on is concrete solutions to concrete problems. We also witnessed the extraordinary abilities of these news members of Congress.
This month, on April 18, Billy Ray has arranged for us to meet 3 more of this Phenomenal Class of Freshman Representatives.
If you can manage the free time, it’s well worth the time and braving LA traffic.
*Billy Ray is a screenwriter, director, and Democratic Activist, perhaps best known for co-writing the screenplay to the 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games, and his Academy Award nominated screenplay for Captain Phillips.
* Kim Schrier was born and raised in LA, and earned a bachelor’s degree from UC – Berkeley, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in astrophysics. She then attended UC – Davis School Medical School, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Stanford University, and worked as a pediatrician in Ashland, Oregon, for one year before joining Virginia Mason Medical Center in Issaquah, Washington, in 2001.
* Colin Zachary Allred (born April 15, 1983) is currently serving as the U.S. Rep. for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District, which covers the northeastern corner of Dallas, as well as many of its northeastern suburbs such as Garland, Richardson, the Park Cities and Rowlett. Allred is a civil rights attorney and former American football linebacker who played for the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League (NFL). Allred left football to pursue a degree in law, receiving his J.D. from the UC – Berkely, followed by positions in both the Obama administration and the U.S. Attorney’s office.
* Elissa Blair Slotkin (born July 10, 1976) is the US Rep for Michigan’s 8th District, which covers the capital of Lansing and the northern suburbs of Detroit. She previously served as Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs (2015 – 2017) and Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (2013-2014). Prior to that, she worked for the Director of National Intelligence, and held positions at the CIA and the National Security Council. Slotkin was born in New York City in 1976. She spent her early life on a farm in Holly, roughly halfway between Flint and Detroit. She received a B.A. from Cornell University (1998) and an M.I.A. from Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs(2003). In 2001, she completed a course in the Arabic language at The American University in Cairo. After leaving the Defense Department in January 2017, Slotkin moved back to her family’s farm in Holly, where she owned and operated Pinpoint Consulting.

Melinda French Gates is a philanthropist, businesswoman, and global advocate for women and girls. As the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda sets the direction and priorities of the world’s largest philanthropy. She is also the founder of Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company working to drive social progress for women and families in the United States. Melinda grew up in Dallas, Texas. She received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Duke University and an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School. Melinda spent the first decade of her career developing multimedia products at Microsoft before leaving the company to focus on her family and philanthropic work. She lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband, Bill. They have three children, Jenn, Rory and Phoebe.
For the last twenty years, Melinda French Gates has been on a mission. Her goal, as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, invest in women.
In The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World, Melinda traces her awakening to the link between women’s empowerment and the health of societies. She shows some of the tremendous opportunities that exist right now to “turbo-charge” change. And she provides simple and effective ways each one of us can make a difference. Convinced that all women should be free to decide whether and when to have children, Melinda took her first step onto the global stage to make a stand for family planning. That step launched her into further efforts: to ensure women everywhere have access to every kind of job; to encourage men around the globe to share equally in the burdens of household work; to advocate for paid family and medical leave for everyone; to eliminate gender bias in all its forms.
Throughout, Melinda introduces us to her heroes in the movement towards equality, offers startling data, shares moving conversations she’s had with women from all over the world―and shows how we can all get involved.
A personal statement of passionate conviction, this book tells of Melinda’s journey from a partner working behind the scenes to one of the world’s foremost advocates for women, driven by the belief that no one should be excluded, all lives have equal value, and gender equity is the lever that lifts everything.
Melinda will be donating all the amounts she receives from this book to charity.

Meet the Candidate
This is the first of our “Meet the Candidate” Series, done to give to our residents and neighbors the opportunity to meet Presidential Candidates in person. Rep. Gabbard is the first 2020 Presidential Candidate to come to Malibu to meet the community. She was one of the first female combat veterans to run for Congress (in 2012), and is the first to run for President. Now in her 4th term in Congress, she has been a member of the House Foreign Affairs, Armed Services and Homeland Security Committees for 6 years. Having grown up in Hawaii, she shares the same love and respect for the environment and the ocean that we have in Malibu – and she’s a surfer! For more information on Rep. Gabbard, visit www.Tulsi2020.com.
